A devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck in the early hours of February 6th followed by a second powerful 7.5-magnitude temblor only hours later. The two quakes, along with at least 200 aftershocks, have caused massive destruction in Turkey and Syria, killing or wounding thousands of people and affecting millions. Countless people have been left homeless, searching for and grieving their lost loved ones. The deadly seismic events could be felt as far away as Lebanon and Israel. This is among the strongest earthquakes to strike this area in nearly a century.
Samaritan’s Purse is working through local partners on the ground to assess needs in the Kahramanmaraş region of southern Turkey near the border with Syria. We quickly deployed disaster response specialists and began to position relief supplies for rapid deployment. Needs are even worse as families lack adequate shelter and electricity and face harsh weather conditions in the cold winter.
On February 9th, Samaritan’s Purse airlifted a 52-bed Emergency Field Hospital, approximately 90 metric tons of relief goods, and dozens of additional staff to Turkey to address the immediate medical needs of families suffering from the disaster. The flight will land Feb. 10, and then the hospital components will be transported to Antakya, historically known as Antioch. In this city, where believers were first called Christians, the hospital will be set up to include two emergency operating rooms and a pharmacy.
Our teams will also be bringing urgently needed items, such as tarp, blankets, and solar lights, into the hardest-hit areas. Between the hospital and other efforts, we will have around 100 Disaster Assistance Response Team specialists on the ground.
- Franklin Graham, President of Samaritan’s Purse.
Please join us in praying for so many suffering families and for our teams and partners on the ground serving them in Jesus’ Name.
Also, please partner with us by providing for the needs of the people affected by the disaster. When natural disasters strike, Samaritan’s Purse responds quickly to bring relief and alleviate suffering. One practical way is by handing out “family survival kits” that include warm blankets, buckets with water filters, cooking utensils, soap, and other daily essentials. Give now to support a family in need!
Samaritan’s Purse stands ready to respond at a moment’s notice whenever and wherever disaster strikes. We specialize in meeting critical needs for victims of conflict, disaster, famine, and epidemics throughout the world, often working through ministry partners on the ground. We provide food, water, shelter, medicine, and other assistance in the Name of Jesus Christ.
